“Les Statues Meurent Aussi” (1953)

This short documentary, directed by Alain Resnais and Chris Marker, traces the impact of French colonialism on African art. The screening was followed by a panel discussion in English. Panelists included Ludovic Cortade, Assistant Professor of French, New York University; Awam Amkpa, Associate Professor of Drama, Director of Africana Studies, New York University; Denis Hollier, Professor of French, New York University; Alisa LaGamma, curator, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and Susan Vogel, Professor of African Art and Architecture, Columbia University, founding director, Museum for African Art, and filmmaker.
